Start up to three months before your pass expires, and never after it. A Malaysian student pass is usually issued for up to one year, so most students renew at least once. EMGS checks your passport, your study record and your insurance.

What you need
A shorter list than your first application. Ask your international office how it handles renewals; the EMGS pages we checked don’t say who submits.
Fees to plan for
An 8% service tax applies to EMGS processing fees. If your insurance ends before the new pass, EMGS asks you to top it up to the pass expiry or 12 months from the insurance start, whichever is lower. Figures checked 3 November 2026.
Honest gaps
The official pages we checked don’t state a renewal processing time or the penalty for a late renewal. Plan for delays: apply early, keep copies, and ask your institution if anything is unclear. Overstaying a pass is a serious immigration matter, so treat the expiry date as a hard deadline.
Questions

Ask us your questionEMGS strongly recommends applying as early as three months before your pass expires, and always before the expiry date, so you never overstay.
The EMGS fee calculator lists a renewal application fee of RM270 for private and public universities (IPTS and IPTA) and about RM151 for the other institution types EMGS lists, plus the student pass fee of RM60 and the i-Kad. An 8% service tax applies to processing fees. Insurance must also cover the new pass period.
No. EMGS says renewing students do not need in-country medical screening.
EMGS looks for a CGPA of at least 2.0 and overall attendance of at least 80%. If you are below either, your institution submits an explanation letter with the renewal.
The EMGS pages we checked do not state a processing time for renewals. That is one more reason to start three months early.
