The routes explained
Four ways to a
foreign degree.
All four are forms of transnational education, offered in Malaysia with a foreign university.
Branch campus
A foreign university runs its own campus in Malaysia. Several say graduates receive the same degree as the home campus.
Twinning
Start at a Malaysian institution, then finish at the partner university abroad. You register with both.
3+0 degree
Complete every year of a foreign partner university’s degree in Malaysia. The partner awards the degree.
Dual award
Graduate with two degrees, one from the Malaysian university and one from its foreign partner.
Some foreign universities also give credit transfer or advanced standing for study completed in Malaysia. Each university decides how much credit it recognizes.
Compare the routes
Which route
fits your plans?
Think about your budget, how long you want to spend abroad and which university’s name you want on your degree.
| Route | Where you study | Degree awarded by | Time abroad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branch campus | The foreign university’s campus in Malaysia | The foreign university | None needed. Some courses offer a transfer |
| Twinning (1+2, 2+1) | Part in Malaysia, part with the partner abroad | The foreign partner university | One or more years, with a student visa for that country |
| 3+0 or 4+0 | Fully at a Malaysian institution | The foreign partner university | None |
| Dual award | At the Malaysian university | Both universities: two degrees | Depends on the program |
| Credit transfer | Start in Malaysia, finish abroad | The university you finish at | Usually the final years |
Summary based on Study Malaysia’s descriptions of each study mode, checked 31 October 2026. Conditions differ by program.

Recognition
Check these
before you enroll.
A foreign university’s name is only part of the picture. Know exactly what you will receive.
Ask every institution
- Is the program accredited? Search the MQA register
- Which university’s name is on the certificate and transcript?
- For twinning, what grades and visa are needed to transfer?
- Will your home country or employer recognize this degree?
Good to know
- Transfer to an overseas campus is never automatic
- Fees and entry rules differ between routes
- Recognition at home depends on your country’s rules
- Each institution decides on admission
MQA’s Code of Practice for Programme Accreditation describes a collaborative program as one where the curriculum is owned, and the award conferred, by the partner university. Search the MQA register
Questions about foreign degrees
What students ask
about global pathways.
Your first consultation is free.
Any paid support is agreed separately.
What is a 3+0 degree in Malaysia?
A 3+0 degree lets you complete every year of a foreign partner university’s degree at a Malaysian institution. The foreign partner awards the degree, so you do not need to study abroad.
What is a 2+1 twinning program?
In a 2+1 twinning program, you study the first two years in Malaysia and the final year at the partner university abroad. You register with both institutions, and you need a student visa for the final year.
Is a branch campus degree the same as the home campus degree?
Several branch campuses say so. For example, the University of Nottingham Malaysia states that it confers exactly the same degrees as in the UK. Always check the wording on the certificate and transcript for your program.
Which foreign universities have campuses in Malaysia?
They include Monash, Nottingham, Curtin, Swinburne, Heriot-Watt, Southampton, Xiamen, Newcastle University Medicine, Reading, and RCSI and UCD. Check current programs and intakes with each university.
Is a 3+0 or twinning degree recognized?
Programs offered in Malaysia must be accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and you can search them on the MQA register. Recognition in your home country depends on its own rules, so check before you enroll.
Can I transfer to the overseas campus later?
Some programs allow it, such as transfers from Monash University Malaysia to Australia for some courses. Transfer is never automatic and depends on your grades, the program and a visa for that country.
Is the initial consultation free?
