Your options

Campus housing or a private rental?

Neither is always better. It depends on your institution, your budget and how independent you want to be in your first year.

Campus or institution housing

  • Booked through your institution, often before you arrive
  • Close to classes, with fewer contracts to manage
  • A simpler choice for a first year away from home
  • Places and rules vary, so ask your international office early

Private rental near campus

  • A room or unit in a condominium or shared house
  • More choice of area, privacy and facilities
  • A tenancy contract, deposits and utilities to manage yourself
  • Worth viewing before you commit to a long lease

Before you pay a deposit

Six checks for any private rental.

Many housing problems start with a deposit paid too quickly. These checks take an hour and can save a semester of stress.

Questions

About student accommodation.

Practical answers from our Kuala Lumpur team.

Ask us your question
Should I book student accommodation before I arrive in Kuala Lumpur?

Book somewhere safe for your first nights before you fly. For a longer stay, campus housing can usually be booked through your institution in advance; for a private rental, it is safer to view the room (in person or by live video) and read the contract before paying a deposit.

Is campus housing or a private rental better?

Campus housing is simpler for a first year: the institution manages it and it is close to classes. A private rental gives more choice and privacy but means a tenancy contract, deposits and utilities to manage. Many students start on campus and move out later.

What should I check before paying a deposit?

Who owns or manages the property, what the contract says about the deposit and notice period, which utilities and internet are included, the journey to campus, and building security. Pay with a traceable method and keep receipts.

Can FPM find accommodation for me?
